We are sure that many of you have heard that “the more we sweat when doing any physical activity, the more weight we lose, and the more fat we burn.”
The question is: does sweating make you lose weight? It's one of the most frequently asked questions, especially for people who are just starting to exercise and whose most immediate challenge is to lose weight as quickly as possible.
We have all come across people who, even in the middle of summer and with high temperatures, wear warm sweaters, coats... and even those who, in more extreme cases, “cover” their belly with some type of plastic or film.
For reasons like these and to clarify some essential concepts, especially for people who do it or for those who have doubts.

What exactly is sweat?

Sweat is a body thermoregulator responsible for regulating the increase in temperature that appears in our body as a result of the physical activity we are carrying out.
Therefore, sweating is a natural and fundamental process that occurs especially when we exercise, because if we do not eliminate or compensate for this excess body temperature, we can even develop a fever.
It is also important to bear in mind that each person is different and that we do not all sweat in the same way or at the same rate. This depends on several factors, such as gender, physical condition, weight, etc.

Is it true that sweating makes you lose weight?

Yes, it's true that if we do a workout that requires a lot of muscular effort, as a general rule, we will sweat more and, therefore, burn more calories and fat.
But one thing needs to be clarified: we will burn more calories and more fat due to the intensity of the exercise or training we are doing, which is what will make us sweat, but not as a result of intentionally increasing our body temperature even further.
If we do the same training, but dress warmly or expose ourselves to high temperatures to sweat more, we will actually sweat more, but we will not eliminate or burn more fat than normal.
We can lose weight immediately, as can happen if we go to the sauna, for example, but the sweat we eliminate through our pores will be water and not fat. This water will be replenished as soon as we drink it.

Conclusion:
Does sweating make us lose weight? No.
We burn calories through exercise and when we exercise it is inevitable that we sweat as our body's response, but that does not mean that if we make ourselves sweat excessively we will get better results.
Enjoy your workout or run in comfortable clothes that keep you at a comfortable temperature. Forget the idea of wrapping yourself up in “stories” to sweat, myths are just that: myths!
