Nutrition is one of the areas most prone to fake news.

Here we put an end to some of the myths created over the years that have been repeated so much that they seem true.

1. Eggs increase cholesterol

The egg has approximately 213 mg of cholesterol in the yolk, but much of it is not absorbed. Many studies have shown that egg consumption and increased cholesterol are not related, as they emphasize the benefits it can bring to health if added to meals, including memory, cognitive capacity and the formation of new neurons.

2. Drinking water during a meal makes you gain weight

Water does not make you fat, as it has no calories! There are also those who argue that excess water during meals dilutes gastric juices, which makes the digestive process difficult and dilates the stomach, increasing hunger during subsequent meals! But this argument is false, because the body adjusts to the amount of water and produces more acid if necessary.

3. Vegetables lose nutrients when frozen

There is a lot of talk about whether or not to include frozen vegetables in meals. Freezing a food is the only way to keep it closer to its natural state and thus maintain its nutrients. Furthermore, low temperatures prevent the action of microorganisms.

4. Without meat we have no vitality!

Meals must include meat!!! It's very common to hear that you need to eat a lot of meat, preferably steak, to have energy. This is a complete lie! For our body to get proteins, it is not necessary to eat meat. We find proteins and other nutrients in legumes such as beans, grains, mushrooms or lentils, for example.

5. Bread makes you fat!

Bread is not high in calories. However, a lot of bread implies a lot of calories, like a lot of fruit, a lot of rice or a lot of meat… Each food in essence has a caloric value. But it's the sum of all the calories we eat in a meal that should count! In the overwhelming majority of cases, what is important is not the bread, but what is put on the bread!
We should actually eat bread for breakfast and snacks, and avoid it at meals, since we already put foods on our plates that are equally energetic and have the calories we need, such as rice, potatoes or legumes!

6. Eating before bed makes you fat: Myth

We don't gain weight while we sleep, but rather from the calories in the meals we eat during the day!
Going to bed with an empty stomach and hungry because you have consumed few calories during the day increases the time your body will be fasting, slowing down your metabolism and preventing weight loss.

7. Olive oil is a healthy fat, which is why it makes you less fat: Myth

Olive oil, despite being a healthy fat, is as fattening as other fats. For every 100 g of olive oil we have 900 kcal, so we must use olive oil as carefully as we use any other fat. However, olive oil is preferable to other saturated fats such as oils, as it has other nutritional advantages: it is rich in antioxidants, lowers cholesterol levels and contributes to reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer.
